7 Days of Hearing God

1. The Most Basic Form of Hearing God & Practice

You already DO hear God, just like you were made to breathe so you do breathe. Your heart was made to pump blood and so it does. Similarly, regardless of what you believe about your ability to hear God, you naturally can and do.

Hearing God is natural. Your mind and thought-life is the space built for 2-way communications.

Thoughts are naturally more of a dialogue space than a monologue space. Think about it, your mind often functions in the form of dialogue, even though most of us think we are all alone up there in a monologue.

Sometimes our dialogue is with fear. Other times, it's with hope. Maybe you've spent the morning "conversing" with an experience from the past or with thoughts about the future. Often the voice of other people rolls around in our minds…notice how often and easily your mind jumps into a dialogue, even very subtly.

Today's practice is about noticing: Notice what you notice about your breath, your heartbeat and the dialogue that's going on in your thoughts.

  1. Notice your breath. What does it sound like? How near is it? How does it feel? Can you deepen it?
  2. Notice your heartbeat. What does it feel like to put your finger on the physical pulse of your life?

Hearing and feeling these life-essential processes happening in your body are basic forms of hearing God. There are not words, but so much is being communicated in regards to your life.

Now, notice what you notice when you pray this simple 2-way conversational thought prayer:

  1. Address God in the way that is truly honest for you:

For me, this is "Jesus" or "Yeshua." Maybe for you, it's "the God I'm not even sure exists," or "Father," or "Mother," or "Great I am." Honesty is important and it's ok for this to change as you grow and discover more in conversation with God.

  1. “_(Fill in with a name that honors where you are)______, quiet every voice but Yours.”
  2. Now just notice what comes across the screen of your mind - good, bad, and ugly.

We'll talk about how to process what bubbles up (good, bad, and ugly) in the coming days, but for today you're working on addressing God honestly, quieting and noticing what rolls across the screen of your mind (this will look like how you already think: feelings, pictures, little movies in your mind, memories, ideas, intuitions, seemingly random thoughts).

Great job! See you tomorrow!
