49 Days of Hearing God: Day 48

I’ve heard it said by wise and trusted people that why is the wrong question to ask. I respectfully but certainly disagree.

Have you ever asked God why? I have, I do, and I fully endorse the question!

"Why" is perhaps the most essential question when it comes to connection, understanding and learning. Real learning is impossible without it. "Why" opens the door to a world that we haven’t yet entered. My kids ask why a LOT:

"Why are you and dad going out tonight?"  "Why is grass green?"  "Why do people die?" "Why is my brother being mean?"

The world of marriage is entered by a "why" about a date night...the world of photosynthesis by a question about the color of grass...the world of free will and choice by questioning life’s hard experiences.

As a mom who cares deeply about my kid’s development, I want them to know my "why’s"—especially around things that matter. When my 14-year-old asks a genuine heart "why" it thrills me. It’s a wide open door to deeper conversation with him.

So why are we afraid to ask our loving Father "why"? If I can ask you, myself and others, it’s essential that I ask God.

Jesus, is there any question that I don’t feel comfortable asking you about?

Jesus, what "why" question would it benefit me to ask you?

REMEMBER: Some things take time and experience to truly understand. Trust the process of communication rather than looking for a quick or cheap answer. God may need to take you on a journey to get to the heart of the "why". Trust that when you ask, it’s likely a question God led you to and answers will flow through heart dialogue. A great example of the journey of "why" with God is in Daniel 10:11-13.
