49 Days of Hearing God: Day 20

Core lies are false beliefs we hold about ourselves, others, our circumstances, and God. Andy Reese, author of Freedom Tools says, "these lies are held at the deepest emotional and subconscious level— in the heart. They propel reactions, actions, and decisions."

Our core lies create huge obstacles when it comes to connecting with God.

I once prayed with a man who was frustrated by his inability to intimately connect with God. During prayer, God brought to mind a beach he enjoyed as a child. As he was enjoying that beach again (in his mind’s eye), I asked if he could sense the Lord with him. He responded immediately, "NO! I’m not worthy of being next to Him."

BINGO! Core lie discovered. "I am not worthy." No wonder he couldn’t connect.

I learned that he had felt rejected by his dad growing up and I suspected that was the root of "not worthy". Sure enough, we went through a forgiveness exercise for his dad and the Holy Spirit revealed the core lie and the cause. Then he heard God say to him "You are my son." The man left hopeful and excited about his new connection with God.

A favorite pastor of mine says, "I can’t afford to have a thought in my head about me that God doesn’t have in His".

What thoughts are you having that God doesn’t have?

Ask God: What am I believing about myself that YOU don’t believe about me? When did I first believe that lie? What is the truth?

Journal what comes to you. Then break "agreement" with the lie.

Pray: I no longer accept or agree with the lie that says ___________ , and I choose to believe God’s truth that says  ___________ ."
